The physical education program here at Aspen is one which builds with the students offering challenging activities and skills at each grade. The basic idea behind the curriculum is based off of research done by George Graham from the University of North Carolina. His research shows how to teach to ability and developmental levels instead of just the age. With this I can tailor my teaching to all students so they can get the most out of any activity we are doing. Here is a link to the
PE Scope and Sequence.
For our grades K-5 we work on skills and drills from many different sports and activities instead of just working on one sport. For instance, instead of having a baseball unit we have a throwing and catching unit which encompasses throwing a baseball, a football, and even a frisbee. For 6th grade and older we start to work on actual sports to find out rules and strategies for a way to get better in those areas. As an example, we will talk about the history of basketball, how it started, the rules, run plays, and finally scrimmage.
I have also thrown in a few things I have learned throughout my career which work well in creating lifetime fitness such as dance, team building activities, jump rope, and cupstacking, which is what you see a picture of at the top of this page. I hope you all enjoy your wonderful year here at Aspen as I know I will enjoy running around and playing fun games with you.
In regards to shoes to wear in the gym, you are able to bring an extra pair of non-marking tennis shoes to wear for the sole purpose of during physical education class. These shoes can be ones which fit under the uniform policy, but do not have to be all white, brown, or black.
